What is a phoneme? A phoneme is a unit of sound that can distinguish one word from another in a particular language. For example in English, /i:/ and /ɪ/ are two separate phonemes because 'sheep' (= /ʃi:p/) & 'ship' (= /ʃɪp/) are two different words with a different meaning in English. /l/ and /r/ are also different phonemes because 'light' (= /lɑɪt/) and 'right' (= /rɑɪt/) are two different words.
However, if there is no difference in meaning from one word to another, for example with light and dark /l/ in English, we do not speak of two separate phonemes but simply phonetic variants.
