The year five hundred B.C. The climate in Europe is becoming wetter and cooler. Greek cities in Ionia on the coast of Asia Minor raise a revolt against the Persian government. Athens and other Greek cities support the rebels. Eventually the rebellion is put down. This begins the fight between the Persians and the Greeks. A conflict arises over trade routes in the eastern Mediterranean between the autocratic Persian Empire and the self-governing confederation of Greek city-states. Grapes are grown in Greece and Italy.
