On November 23, fishers, local leaders, and mayors took the lead in calling for action to protect Honduras' 12 nautical miles. Their call prompted the national government to step in and offer crucial support. Governments, municipal authorities, local leaders, and NGO representatives then convened in the La Ceiba municipality, solidifying their commitment to this cause. Participants pledged to actively promote responsible artisanal fishing, review environmental legal frameworks, and address marine pollution.

This strategic initiative, spurred by grassroots efforts, seeks to identify gaps and strengths, fostering a regulatory environment that supports marine conservation. Notably, the ICF recognized the significance of this movement and awarded the first-ever funds directly to fisher associations working to protect coastal waters. This achievement is historic, as these representatives now stand as the first Afro-Honduran community-led entities to both apply for and successfully secure funding from FAPVS.

Beyond these environmental considerations, authorities emphasized that efforts will be concentrated on improving financing opportunities, acknowledging the need for ecosystem recovery of degraded marine areas in Honduras, and implementing measures that provide comprehensive support to local fishing communities.
