4 Chord Progressions to Avoid - Music Theory
Harmony text books often advise us to avoid using certain chord progressions. Why is that? This music theory lesson explains how the chord progressions under consideration can create difficulties in the part writing with consecutive / parallel fifths and octaves and also explains why the progressions are best avoided at cadence points. We consider the smooth progression of individual voices and how certain progressions create awkward leaps and we hear examples where alternative choices of chords generate more convincing outcomes. The video goes on to demonstrate how to use each of the progressions successfully and explores why style, mood and musical context make an impact on the choice to use these progressions or not.
