Balance in Cinematography - Symmetry and Asymmetry
Symmetry and asymmetry are two opposing but equally powerful composition techniques.
Symmetry refers to shots that are perfectly balanced, with the subject or elements of the shot placed symmetrically within the frame. This creates a sense of order and stability within the shot, which can be used to convey a sense of harmony or balance.
Asymmetry, on the other hand, refers to shots that are intentionally unbalanced, with the subject or elements of the shot placed off-center. This creates a sense of tension and movement within the shot, which can be used to convey a sense of conflict or chaos.
Both techniques can be used to great effect in a variety of shots, from landscapes to close-ups.
