0:00 Introduction
We are talking about the small pop-up saying “audio service is not running” that many Windows 10 users see on the bottom-right corner of their screens. If you’re also seeing the same error, it simply means that the audio devices on your system aren’t working. As irritating as this may look, the good news is it’s possible to troubleshoot the “audio service is not running” error. In today’s episode, we’ll discuss different methods to fix the said error and restore the audio playback on your computer.
1:00 Why Is Audio Service Not Running?
Reason 1: Windows updates
Reason 2: Missing audio drivers
Reason 3: Malware attacks
2:11 Solution 1: Restart Windows Audio Services
Windows Audio Service is a dedicated built-in program that’s responsible for running and managing audios on your Windows system.
Step 1 - To restart Windows Audio Service, open the Run window and type “services.msc”. Hit enter and you’ll be prompted to the Windows Service screen.
Step 2 - You’ll see a list of all the active Windows services on your system. Here locate the “Windows Audio” option and right-click on it. Then, click the “Restart” button.
Step 3 - Once again, right-click on the Windows Audio and tap “Properties”. Using the drop-down menu, change the startup type to “Automatic”.
3:10 Solution2: Check for Sound Settings and Hardware Issues
Step 1 - Locate these three services
● RPC Endpoint Mapper
● Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
● DCOM Server Process Launcher
Then, right-click on each of these services and click the “Start” button to activate them.
Step 2 - Once again, change the startup type of these services to “Automatic” from the “Properties” window. After the process completes, simply restart your system and check if the “audio service not responding” error gets fixed or not.
4:05 Solution3: Disable Audio Enhancements in Windows 10/11
Step 1 - Open the Cortana search bar and type “sound”. Double-click on the first search result to open the audio control panel.
Step 2 - Right-click on the primary audio device and tap “Properties”.
Step 3 - Finally, go to the “Enhancements” tab, and check the “Disable Audio Enhancements” checkbox. Click Ok to save your changes. This will disable all the audio enhancements and you won’t see the “audio service not responding” error.
5:02 Solution4: Update the HD Audio CODEC and Other Drivers
Step 1 - Press Windows+X and click “Device Manager”. Expand the “Sound, video and game controllers” category and right-click on IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
Step 2 - Now, click on “Update Drivers” and follow the on-screen instructions to update the selected drivers to the latest version.
5:40 Solution5: Add the Network and Audio Services Manually
Now, if the audio services still don’t respond, the next step would be to manually add the network and audio services via command prompt.
Step 1 - First of all, run the command prompt as administrator.
Step 2 - Type “net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice” and press enter
Step 3 - Again, type “net localgroup Administrators /add localservice” and hit enter.
6:20 Solution6: Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter
Finally, if nothing works in your favor, the last resort would be to run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter. It’s a built-in Windows utility that’s specifically designed to resolve various audio-related errors in Windows.
Step 1 - To run the audio troubleshooter, open the “Settings” window and click “Update & Security”.
Step 2 - Select “Troubleshoot” and tap on “Additional troubleshooters”. Then, expand the “Playing Audio” option and click on “Run the Troubleshooter”.

● Avoid enabling “Audio Enhancements”.
● Make sure that you’re using the right one at the moment.
● Temporarily disable Windows updates on your system.
