Delidding a Soldered Intel 9900K Coffee Lake CPU
So I finally jumped to the game aswell. I decided to delid my old P0 stepping engineering sample 9900K that is not that great on water or LN2 so it can be wasted for this test. For this attempt I purchased the QuickSilver kit, aswell as a custom IHS + direct die frame from Rockitcool. However, I did not purchase a separate delid tool for this CPU generation, as I realized that the IHS is pretty identical to Ivy Bridge CPUs, so I decided to utilize my old Ivy Bridge delid tool top piece.
The actual delidding went quite smooth in the end, and the quicksilver really helps to remove the indium solder residues. I would not remove it with sharp blade or similar that could damage or scratch the die or the IHS.
The overall temperature gain was very minimal, not even over 2 degrees. So I woudln't really do this considering the money used and the risk involved. Delidding a soldered CPU is much riskier than a CPU with conventional thermal paste. However the end result might be greater with custom IHS or direct die cooling, or you could go even further by sanding down the actual die to make it thinner like Der8auer did. I would not just bother too much as this can only help daily air or water cooling, and it will make the end result much worse for subzero cooling as indium solder has better thermal performance than any conventional thermal paste, and liquid metal doesn't have good performance below zero.
