Harvesting the Black Walnut
With Fall time officially upon us comes the shorter days and cooler nights, the yellowing leaves and a crunchy ground. And while it may seem that the summer's bounty has came and went, looking in the right place, you may nut be surprised to find that fall has a bounty all of its own.

They may be found in your backyard, in your potted plants, at work, at school, or even in a parking lot. Today’s adventure takes us to our local park, where we look for the Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) At this point near the beginning of November the leaves and fruit of the black walnut have begun to turn a bright yellow. They can be distinguished by the pinnate leaves - a long stem with rows of pointed leaflets - each leaflet looking something like a spearhead.
Once the fruit has dropped, the flesh quickly turns black staining anything it comes into contact with. Don’t worry although the fruit may look less than desirable and full of worms, the extremely tough shell will protect the walnut meat from any contamination.
Harvesting is as easy as picking them up off the ground, green... or rotten. And within 10 minutes or less one can quickly fill up a large bucket!
