Fortinet's - Fortigate firewall can be upgraded by two ways.
Manual (You download & install the firmware)
Auto (FGT uses the Internet to connect to the fortiGuard via the forticloud) to download & install the firmware files.
In the manual way of upgrading the firmware of fortigate, you need to go to the firmware download page of fortinet & download the required image.
But which firmware will you download? Can You directly upgrade your Fortinet's firmware?
Well Yes & No.
NO is because fortinet recommends you follow fortigate's upgrade path to avoid any configurational losses.
YES is when you have a new deployment if fortigate & you have no worry of configuration losses on your Fortigate.
If you go for manual upgrade & follow the upgrade paths specified by fortinet, then it becomes a bit of a hassle.
With the auto upgrade, we leverage the remote firmware management feature of fortigate, this feature is present inside the fortigate firewall..
