How 3D TV Works
Before you decide to buy a 3D TV for your family, it is important to know how 3D works. With this knowledge, you can make the best decision about which type of TV suits your needs and budget.
The trick to 3D is that the movies and shows that are ultimately presented in this way are shot with two cameras. These cameras each shoot a different image - one for the right eye and one for the left. The two images merge when you wear a pair of special 3D glasses, creating the illusion of 3D.
There are several different ways of designing a TV to present 3D images. However, all of these methods follow the same basic principle of producing two separate, moving images and sending one image to your left eye and the other to your right eye. In order for the 3D illusion to work properly, the left eye mustn't see the image for the right eye and vice versa.
Today, there are 2 types of 3D TVs on the market: "active" & "passive". Each of these creates a 3D effect in a distinct way.
Active 3D Technology
Active 3D technology is made possible through the use of active-shutter glasses. These glasses are battery-powered and are equipped with an electronic system that alternately opens and closes your left and right lenses at a very high speed. At one particular moment, only the left lens will be open, allowing you to view the image for your left eye while your right lens remains closed. Almost immediately, the lenses will switch roles. Suddenly, your right lens will be open and your left lens will be blocked, and you will get the image for your right eye on the TV screen. This technology, which is also known as "alternate-frame sequencing," will keep this pattern going dozens of times per second.
These glasses almost always need to be purchased separately, as it is very rare for a 3D TV to come with them. Active-shutter glasses are quite a bit more expensive than passive glasses are, but they give a higher-quality 3D image and take a lot longer to tire your eyes or start making you feel sick. However, 3D images can lose a significant amount of brightness and begin flickering noticeably when you use active-shutter glasses.
Passive 3D Technology
The passive system differs from the active system in that it requires a much simpler pair of glasses. Passive system glasses use circular polarisation to generate a different image for each of your eyes from the same source. This works in cinemas because two images are projected onto the screen in rapid succession. Through a polarisation filter, these images appear at a total rate of 144Hz. The images alternate between the left and right eyes, meaning that they appear at 72Hz for each eye.
Passive 3D TV has a market advantage over active 3D TV in that passive 3D glasses are inexpensive. The majority of 3D TVs come ready with two to four pairs of complementary passive glasses. Since passive glasses don't require batteries, they are lighter-weight and quite a bit more comfortable to wear than most active glasses are.
