Driving can be an anxiety-inducing event for many people. Within the neurodiverse population, particularly those with Autism, individuals tend to experience heightened levels of anxiety when learning how to drive, especially when it is time to take their driving exam. As a result, many capable teens and adults with Autism avoid pursuing their driver’s license due to this overriding anxiety. This is where The DRIVE Program comes into play! DRIVE is a blend of virtual and hands-on driving experience, coupled with behavior analysis and systematic methods of teaching, preparing neurodiverse learners for success. We currently have numerous neurodiverse young adults enrolled in the program. Our results show that VR training is reducing student anxiety over time. Within the next couple of months, our students will begin incorporating behind-the-wheel driving with a local driving school as part of this program.
