Jahida Esperanza with Hazel Miller
Les and I went to go see the incomparable Hazel Miller & The Collective perform a Tribute to Aretha Franklin at the TriLakes Art Center. Lo and behold we got front row seats! If you're not familiar with Hazel Miller, then you need to get yourself acquainted. She's a Colorado institution that has sung at countless Broncos games, with Big Head Todd & The Monsters, and is being inducted into the Colorado Hall of Fame next week!
Between songs, someone requested Ain't No Mountain High Enough, a song I am VERY familiar with, having sung it in church a few times, and the band had not worked it up, so Hazel started singing it acapella. Well, as we ALL know, I have never been accused of being a shy and delicate flower, so I belted it out along with her. She stopped and pointed towards me and said, "Who is that?! You better get up here!" With heavy (not really 😜) prompting from my friends and the crowd, I got up there. This video was the result! Hazel was so incredible and said to the crowd afterwards, "That NEVER happens! I've been doing this a long time and you NEVER get someone that can come up here and do that! Girl, you bad!"
After the show I had multiple people approach me, asking for cards, and asking why they hadn't heard me yet, saying I need to be playing everywhere, all the time. 🙈
Then I went backstage and spoke to Hazel and Coco who immediately invited me to sing lead on two songs for her legendary Christmas show with THEM as backing vocalists! 🤯 To say I was in shock is an understatement! We're keeping in touch and I'm sure there will be some fun stuff between us on the horizon! I even had someone from the audience last night already contact me this morning saying they are coming to my next gig and can't wait to see ME!
