Karl Bryullov was born in 1799 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was a child prodigy who started drawing at the age of seven and entered the Imperial Academy of Arts at the age of nine. He studied under the renowned Russian painter Andrey Ivanov and later traveled to Italy, where he was inspired by the works of classical art and arte. He became famous for his large-scale historical and mythological scenes, as well as his portraits and landscapes.
One of his most famous works is The Last Day of Pompeii, which depicts the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD that destroyed the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The painting is a masterpiece of painting (visual art form), as it combines dramatic composition, vivid colors, realistic details, and emotional expression. The painting took Bryullov four years to complete and was exhibited in Rome in 1833. It was a huge success and earned him international fame and recognition.
Another notable work by Bryullov is The Red Kot, which shows a young girl holding a red cat in her arms. The painting is a charming example of figurative art, as it captures the innocence and beauty of childhood. The painting was created in 1835 and was a gift for the daughter of Bryullov’s friend, the poet Nikolay Gnedich. The painting is also known as The Italian Girl with a Cat or The Italian Midday.
Bryullov was not only a talented artist, but also a generous and kind person. He supported many young and aspiring artists, especially those from Russian art schools. He also donated money and paintings to various charitable causes, such as the construction of a hospital in Rome and the restoration of the Pompeii art and Pompeii statues. He died in 1852 in Italy, leaving behind a rich legacy of fine art and art books.
