Pathé (Phonograph) - History
Brothers Charles and Émile Pathé, owners of a Parisian bistro in Rue Fontaine near the Palace Pigalle, founded Pathé records in the mid-1890s. Initially, they sold Columbia and Edison phonographs and the records that could be played on them.

In 1905, Pathé introduced its first single-sided disc records made by recording on a wax top on a cement base. In October 1906, they began recording on a shellac disc. The disc ran at 90 rpm and started on the inside. Pathé ended its production of cylinder phonographs in 1906 and cylinder records around 1914.

Because Pathé’s discs were vertically cut, a unique Pathé phonograph equipped with a sapphire ball stylus was required to play them. The sapphire ball stylus did not require a needle change every play. Special attachments were developed to allow a Pathé phonograph to play laterally-cut records.

In 1920, Pathé introduced needle cut records in the United States. They could be played on standard phonographs. Introduction to the United Kingdom followed in 1921. A year later, Pathé introduced its Perfect label, an inexpensive dime-store brand.

Pathé discontinued its main record labels in the United States in 1930. The Perfect label survived until 1938.
