Quadruple screening test is a screening test for the pregnant woman which is done to screen or decrease or analyse the risk of a genetic disorder in the unborn foetuses. Quadruple test is done between 15 to 20 weeks of pregnancy. These are blood tests and are only screening tests. These are done in any conditions of high risk like a positive NT scan test or a high risk for a down syndrome or any genetic disorders such like the age of more than 35 years or a previous history of any genetic disorders, family history or in diabetic patients. In all these cases these tests are done. They are just screening modality where you check for hormone levels. They include the alpha fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotrophin, the estradiol levels and inhibin A. So these blood tests are done for these hormone, their level determined and calculated and given the result as screen positive or screen negative. When it is screen positive the risk of a genetic disorder or an abnormality orn a neural tube defect is very high. But when it is screened as negative the risks are low. So these are just risk relative tests. They are not diagnostic. They usually pick up 80-85% of Down syndrome. But positive test does not indicate a Down syndrome positivity or any risk positivity. They just inform that the risk is very high and other tests like anomaly scan, higher level anomaly scan or an amniocentesis may need to be done.
