The PS3 was launched in 2006 with a ridiculous US launch price of $599 for the higher end-model. This was a bad pricing strategy especially pre-recession by Sony. It was a quick U-turn from the “games-for-everyone” mantra that enabled the original PlayStation and PS2 to reach the wider market that no previous console had reached.

Early in the PS3 life cycle there was a lack of good exclusive blockbuster games, the Uncharted series was the exception. It wasn’t until the start of the current decade for a new exciting game line-up, with God of War 3 and Heavy Rain giving gamers excitement about the console, during this time the Xbox 360 had better exclusive games like Halo.

The PS3 was not a total failure but a big setback; it still sold over 80 million consoles, on even keel with the Xbox 360.

The PS3 had a proprietary Cell processor that made it difficult for developers to build games on. The lead PS4 architect Mark Cerny’s primary objective was to come up with an architecture that is easier to build games for the PS4. "The biggest thing is we didn't want the hardware to be a puzzle that programmers would be needing to solve in order to make quality titles," he said back in 2013.

The Launch of the PS4…

The biggest gaming event of the decade for PlayStation was most definitely the PS4 reveal back in 2013. This was a defining moment for Sony that had a big impact on the entire generation, this was largely due to Microsoft’s DRM policy on game ownership that required mandatory online check-ins once a day abandoning those with poor or no internet access especially those gamers living in rural areas. Sony, on the other hand, just concentrated on creating and marketing a gaming console that had no complicated online check-in policy winning the hearts of many game retailers and gamers who swap and trade second-hand games. Pre-owned games are a big part of any gaming ecosystem and the PS4 did not alienate this group and turned Xbox's mistake into the most important victory in the gaming war.

Sony finishes the decade (and the generation) as front runners six years after its PS4 launch. Microsoft, Sony’s fierce competitor has spent the years playing catch-up ever since the E3 reveal blunder learning some of the lessons Sony learned from the PS3. That is, no one wants to fork out more than $400 for a gaming console at launch and you need awe inspiring exclusive games to sell your console, this is especially true in a gaming war where the competition is fierce and there is very little separating the top two console’s power and hardware specs.

The PS4 is now strongly associated with around five or six exclusive games that ended up being super important to the console's distinctiveness. Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, Spiderman and Horizon Zero Dawn are good examples of big exclusives. Sony's strategy around these kinds of big games is very clear with the PS5 launch in less than a year away.

As the new president of Sony Worldwide Studios, Herman Hulst said, "We are very committed to the types of games we've been making at Worldwide Studios for the last decade: big, spectacular experiences with story and characters at the core. We will keep making these games, because we love to make them." This also seems what the gamers and critiques want as the response to these big exclusives has been over whelming.

From Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, Spiderman and Horizon Zero Dawn, we saw that direction manifest over the last decade, while Microsoft struggled due to the lack of similar high-quality exclusives.

Sony was roughly on even keel with Microsoft on sales at the beginning of the decade, having lost the strong lead it had over the previous two decades largely thanks to the PS1 and PS2. The PS4 thrived because it took the opposite approach and lessons learnt from the PS3.

The PS4 Success Story…

In hindsight, the fall of the PS3 was a lesson that had to be learned: it provided a smoother path for the PS4, which was developer friendly, easy to use, and had top notch exclusive games that was awe inspiring.

The upward trend started with The Last of Us Remaster in 2014 and Blood borne in 2015. Then the big triple A games kept coming, with Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War and Spider-Man elevating the PS4 as a must-have console.

The PS4 had its fair share of exclusives that flopped: Knack, The Order: 1886 and Kill zone Shadow Fall to name a few in its first year or so after launch.

What are your thoughts? Is the PS5 a sure shot winner? Will Xbox Series X catch-up changing their strategy?
