Two Whiteman medleys--recorded and issued back-to-back on one side of a 10-inch gold-label RCA Victor ‘Program Transcription’ disc. Manufactured not as a ‘broadcast transcription’ for radio use, this series of early 33 1/3 LP’s was marketed toward the consumer. For additional information, check out the ‘transcription disc’ entry in Wikipedia.
Here we have eight minutes of Whiteman music, two medleys, each of which he had also recorded earlier in a slightly different version for release over two sides of a standard 12-inch Victor 78 #36050. The audio source used for this video is an undated (post-1932) RCA Victor test pressing.
Hot-Cha: Lupe Velez, Bert Lahr, Buddy Rogers, and Eleanor Powell were among the "Hot-Cha" cast. It opened 3-8-32 and ran 119 performances, with music composed by Brown & Henderson. The songs featured on this Whiteman medley are:
1 You Can Make My Life A Bed Of Roses (Marry Me)
2 There I Go Dreaming Again (vocal by Mildred Bailey)
3 Say (vocal by Red McKenzie)
Face The Music: The Moss Hart-Irving Berlin political satire opened 2-17-32 for 165 performances, included Mary Boland in the cast, and introduced a couple of Berlin’s memorable depression-era tunes:
1 Soft Lights And Sweet Music
2 I Say It’s Spinach (And The Hell With It) (vocal by The King’s Jesters)
3 On A Roof In Manhattan
4 Let’s Have Another Cup O’ Coffee (vocal by Red McKenzie)
Test pressing audio, originally issued on RCA Victor Program Transcription L-16008 - Dance Music from ‘Hot-Cha’ and ‘Face The Music’ (Lew Brown-Ray Henderson-Irving Berlin) by Paul Whiteman & his Orchestra, recorded in NYC March 2, 1932 .
