Proto-Germanic is the reconstructed ancestors of the Germanic languages. It was spoken between 500 BC and 500 AD. The various dialects of Proto-Germanic had become distinct languages by about 500 AD. Proto-Germanic is descended from Proto-Indo-European. The dialect of Proto-Indo-European spoken in Scandanavia that would eventually become Proto-Germanic had started developing distinct features during the second and first millenium BC and could be said to be a distinct language by about 500 BC.
