One of the first #villages on #Kefalonia to welcome organised #tourism was #Poros, this picturesque small town of nearly 1000 #residents. The port of the same name links Kefalonia to #Mainland Greece (Kyllini on the #Peloponnese) via regular year-round #ferry service. During the summer months ferries and #tourist #caiques offer #cruises to the neighboring #islands of #Ithaca and #Zakynthos with its blue caves. The harbour is also home to the local #fishing boats which supply the area with fresh fish.
Poros lies some 40 km SE of #Argostoli and the airport, 28 km SE of #Sami and 12 km N of #Skala, while it takes 3 hours or 290 km to reach #Kyllini from #Athens.
The town is built amphitheatrically along the #beach. Thanks to the evolving combination of #mountain-sea and its fish-rich waters, the village has gained #loyal #visitors. If you would like to avoid #package holidays and #experience a more #genuine Greek #lifestyle, Poros is the #best #place in Kefalonia for #independent #travellers. Small #hotel units and apartments ensure a comfortable stay in this quiet and pleasant environment.
The village is divided into three #bays. Poros port to the south, with its couple of #tavernas and bars, separated by a small hillock. The town with its main square, town beach part and main #services such as bank, pharmacy and local #shops. More tavernas and bars lie along the award-winning 'Blue #Flag' beach, #Ragia, separated from the centre of Poros by the #Vohinas river.
The impressive 80-metre deep Poros #gorge is found at the settlement’s west entrance. The #legend says that this part of the mountain was cut by #Hercules. The #mysterious #Drakaina cave confirms human habitation in Poros since 5,700 B.C. Tools, figurines, pottery, the #cult of the #Nymphs and certain marks in the rocks on the side of the gorge, believed to be the she-dragon’s foot prints, complete the #mystery. The #cave is currently closed for public.
Just out of the gorge a rough vehicular #track leads to the 9th century #Atros #monastery, the oldest on #Cephalonia, with impressive views, while further along, another track is leading to the #Mycenaean #tomb of #Tzanata.
With direction to #Skala, off the beach there are a number of large rocks at #Limenia beach, which were allegedly thrown by the #Cyclops at #pirates who were attacking the island.
One of the top #secret places, and most exotic parts of Kefalonia is #Kako #Lagadi beach a stunning true paradise. Difficult #access by the main road, impressive natural arches and sea caves, pristine nature, transparent crystal clear waters, shelter of the rare mediterranean monk #seals.
Skala, a splendid popular #resort of Kefalonia. Golden sand, blue sky, #luxury hotels, long exotic beach and turquoise sea waters create a super irresistible combination.
#Mounda beach. A far west setting, a wide sandy beach with shallow waters and naturist section will totally blow your mind.
