Org Mode is considered to be the Emacs killer application. It is a personal knowledge management and outlining tools for Emacs.
Org Mode allows to include code snippets. There are special #+BEGIN_SRC and #+END_SRC markers for that. Out of the box Org Mode supports many popular languages. For the lesser known programming languages there is a plethora of plugins to make it work. The snippets are automatically highlighted. It is also possible to conveniently edit them in a separate buffer.
This feature is similar to other editors, especially the ones supporting Markdown. What sets Org Mode and Emacs apart is that the code snippets can be executed right inside an Org document. Not only that, the block of texts outside of the snippets can provide the input data and the result of each snippet can be chained.
Org Mode documents are textual files. There is no proprietary format. Those files can be easily checked into a Git repository so that you can follow how they evolve over time.
Org Mode headlines are created with the asterisk sign.
