Septor is a Linux distribution which provides users with a pre-configured computing environment for surfing the Internet anonymously. It is based on Debian's "Testing" branch and it uses Privoxy, a privacy-enhancing proxy, together with the Tor anonymity network to modify web page data and HTTP headers before the page is rendered by the browser. The distribution uses KDE Plasma as the preferred desktop environment and it also includes a the Tor Browser, OnionShare for anonymous file sharing, and Ricochet for anonymous instant messaging.
The Debian Srbija project has announced the release of Septor 2021, a brand-new version of its Debian-based distribution with a focus on preserving the anonymity and privacy of users. Unlike the versions of Septor released last year, which were all based on the stable Debian 10 "Buster" version, this latest release is based on Debian's testing branch, which will eventually become Debian 11 "Bullseye". This means a complete upgrade to the distribution's based systems and applications, including Linux kernel 5.9.15 and KDE Plasma 5.20.4, the default desktop. Browsing is done with the Tor Browser and most internet applications connect to the outside world through the Tor network - this includes Mozilla Thunderbird, the qTox internet messenger, HexChat, QuiteRSS and the OnionShare file sharing utility. The live image also comes with a variety of productivity, graphics and multimedia applications as well as general-purpose utilities.
♞♞ what's new in Septor Linux 2021 ♞♞
Speaking of new changes, the latest Septor 2021 is now based on a testing branch of the upcoming Debian 11 “Bullseye,” instead of the earlier stable Debian 10 “Buster.”
With an updated upstream version, it has also upgraded the Linux kernel and the default KDE Plasma desktop environment to version 5.9.15 and 5.20.4 respectively.
Subsequently, on the application side, Septor Linux 2021 has included a bundle of KDE Application 20.12 along with other updated software for secure communication such as Tor Browser 10.0.7 based on Firefox 78.6 ESR, Thunderbird, HexChat, qTox instant messaging, QuiteRSS, and the OnionShare file sharing utility.
Among the other varieties of productivity, graphics, and multimedia applications, this is what Septor 2021 has to offer:
