NASA has once again postponed its decision on how to safely bring home two U.S. astronauts who have found themselves stuck in space due to serious issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.
In a press conference held on Wednesday, NASA officials stated that a final decision on the astronauts' return would be made by the end of August. The delay comes amidst ongoing and concerns about the spacecraft's safety. Additionally, it was revealed that the astronauts’ space suits are not compatible with the alternative spacecraft that could be used if the Starliner is ultimately deemed unsafe.
Despite the uncertainties, NASA assured the public that the two astronauts are “doing great” and had prepared themselves for the inherent risks associated with their mission. The two astronauts launched from Earth on June 5, expecting a short stay of just eight days at the International Space Station before returning home. However, their journey took an unexpected turn when multiple issues emerged with the Starliner spacecraft.
this first crewed mission of boeing’s starliner has been plagued by technical difficulties. During its approach to the international space station, five of the Starliner’s thrusters failed. In addition to the thruster malfunction, a helium gas leak was detected. Helium is essential for pushing fuel into the spacecraft's propulsion system, and this leak raised further concerns about the spacecraft’s safety.
These issues have resulted in Williams and Wilmore being stranded on the space station while NASA and Boeing engineers conduct technical reviews. The astronauts have now been in space far longer than planned, and the mission’s duration could extend even further depending on the outcome of ongoing evaluations.
During the press conference, NASA officials were repeatedly asked what new information they hoped to uncover in the coming weeks that would reassure them about the Starliner’s safety. However, they did not provide specific answers, instead emphasizing that a “major discussion” is ongoing within NASA regarding the best way to bring the crew back to Earth.
