Volumio is an open source network music streamer that runs on a raspberry pi. It’ll play pretty much any digital music file you’ve got. Including a bunch of internet radio stations and spotify, if you have a premium account.
So why would you want Volumio. Well, I’m using it for these reasons:
I had some really nice speakers that some friends gave me but the receiver was broken so I needed a replacement.
We have a lot of old music in mp3’s that have been tucked away on old HD’s with no way to play them over the house speakers.
I wanted a full featured audio player with integration for HA.
The Volumio UI looks great and can be displayed easily on any device.
Making an audio receiver/amp with Volumio an rpi and an amp hat is the absolute cheapest way to replace an old or broken amp.
Some really smart guys told me it was cool. I usually don’t need much more convincing than that.
Getting Volumio up and running is very simple. There is an rpi image available on their website. They have other disk images available if you want to use a different board. I want to use the sd card to store some mp3’s too, so I’m using a 64gb sd card. Burn the image to the card with etcher or your disk image burner of choice. When it’s done, put it in the rpi, connect your ethernet cable (or we can set up wifi in a minute), if you have external hd’s you can connect those now, attach an amp hat if you have one. For this Volumio pi I’m using this 2 channel amp hat. This particular one accepts 12v power to drive the speakers but also drops some of that voltage to run the pi, so I don’t have to provide a separate ps for the pi.
