RC Drifting - ROC Drift
Drifting is an art, a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers the vehicle with loss of traction, while maintaining control and driving the car through the entirety of a corner or a turn. Drift competitions are held worldwide and are judged according to the speed, angle, showmanship, and line taken through a corner or set of corners. If you want to experience drifting through corners with controlled power slides and throttle management without having to spend $1000s of dollars on a real drift car then you need to try driving a radio controlled rear wheel drive drift car. The concept is that of a real car, but equipped with a gyro system to assist steering when hitting the corners. The RC cars are also equipped with special low-grip tires, usually made from resin or ABS piping. I have been having fun the last few summers driveway drifting with a 4WD drift car but my buddy convinced me to come out to a new indoor drift track to try a 2WD drift car promising me it would be a completely new drift experience.
ROC Drift is the new indoor drift track owed and operated by Zach Rogers in Ontario, NY located in the Big Lots plaza on Route 104. ROC Drift offers a 600sq’ indoor polished concrete drift track and hobby shop that provides a place to grow the local RC drift community. The track is exclusively for 2WD 1/10 scale RC drift cars only. ROC Drift offers RC repair services a well as a wide variety of products and brands including Yokomo, Reve D, HobbyWing, Acuvance, SRC, APlastics and More. These products allow the hobbyist to create their own custom dream build all the way up from mild to wild.
Zach’s vision with ROC Drift is to make the drift experience of easy & welcoming for drivers of all skill levels. If you want to give 2WD RC drifting a try without spending $100s stop on out to ROC Drift take the rental car around the track. It’s just $25 for an hour to use their “RTR” ready-to-run drift car on the track. If you end up getting bit by the drift bug like I did Zach will give you $20 off the purchase of the same RTR brand new out of the show case. This was how I came to purchase my first 2WD drift car and I recently ended up buying another one of these RTR for the kids.
The Yokomo RTR combos Zach offer are ready to run out of the box. Just open the box, insert the batteries and hit the throttle. It’s already assembled with stock electronics, factory tested and tuned giving you a true turn key experience. Current body offerings in the Yokomo RTR series include the Pandem Supra and GR86 in a variety of prepainted colors on a Yokomo RD1.0 (YD-2Z) chassis. Zach sells many accessories to dress up the body to give your car its own unique look. Assembling a kit drift chassis is fun, but if it's your first drift car Zach recommends a pre-assembled RTR. Like with me, as your driving skill increases you can upgrade the car and grow with the drift chassis by upgrading and tuning the kit.
Everyone at ROC Drift have been very welcoming with open arms, have helped me through the new drift driver woes, car setup and more. Even the pros were welcoming when I brought my brother and our kids out to the track to drift. I’ve been to the track at least 2 dozen times now and have made quite the new drift family.
