No pioneers wanted weevils in their wheat! Weevils are small beetles that destroy crops. This play-party game was popular among pioneer children.

Directions:
Four people stand in a circle. Join hands and skip in a circle as you sing the chorus, first to the left, then to the right.

During the verses, everyone drops hands. Keeping in time with the beat, each person in turn puts his or her right hand into the middle of the circle, forming a stack of hands one hand at a time. Continuing with the beat, everyone puts in his or her left hand and adds it to the stack of hands. The motion then reverses as everyone in turn takes out his or her left hand around the circle, then right hand.

If you want more verses you can always add more multiplication tables!

This singing game is featured in "Our Star-Spangled Story," a U.S. history curriculum from Notgrass History for students in grades 1 to 4.
