Hooke’s law in modern physics textbooks is formulated as follows:
At small deformations, the elastic force is proportional to the deformation of the body and is directed in the direction opposite to the direction of movement of the particles of the body during deformation.
The formula is:
F (x) = F (resilience) = - kx
Where:
F is the longitudinal force
x is the displacement of the point of application of force,
k is a coefficient characterizing the stiffness of the sample, which depends on its size and material.
Robert Hook conducted his experiments by stretching and compressing the springs and, in the initial version, wrote down his law as follows: “What is the strength, such is the extension”.
