Robert Groff received the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions during the ambush of a fuel truck convoy near Baghdad, Iraq in April of 2004. As the assistant convoy commander of a 2 mile long fuel truck convoy Robert Groff stayed in the rear of the formation of vehicles maintaining constant contact with the lead vehicle. When the lead vehicle took enemy fire communication was lost and Groff was required to race forward into the fight to maintain control of the convoy. Along the way he rescued eight personnel and fought off members of an opposing force of more than 250 insurgents. When his vehicle became disabled he maintained order in the vehicle and defended its occupants until Bradley Fighting Vehicles could effect thier rescue.
