Programming is one of the most valuable skills going into 2021. From top tier tech companies like Google, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and Facebook to small financial firms, every company can utilize some form of a software engineer.

So you've decided to start learning how to code, but where do you start? Now there are a ton of programming tutorial videos out there, but most of them focus on the syntax and programming style of a specific programming language, whereas this video is designed to set you up to learn how to start programming regardless of the programming language.

When we actually look at how to start programming, one of the first steps is to determine why you want to start coding. Outlining the underlying reasons on why you want to start coding will help clarify how much time you actually want to commit to learning how to program.

The second step in learning how to code is determining what programming language you want to learn first. I've made several videos about what programming language I think you should learn based on your personal circumstance but overall if you are planning to be a computer science major in college, I highly suggest learning a C-style programming language like C, C++ or Java. If you just want to mess around and learn programming as a hobby, then I suggest starting with Python or Javascript.

Now that you know why you want to learn to code, and the programming language you actually want to learn, then you have to download a text editor/IDE. If you have programmed before, this will be obvious, but an IDE is where you actually start writing code. There are a ton of great options like visual studio, visual studio code, bluejay, eclipse, pycharm etc. I suggest VS code for Python and Javascript, and Visual studio for C, C++ and C#.

The next step to learning how to start coding is to actually learn the syntax of the programming language. As mentioned above, there are a ton of programming tutorials and programming for beginners videos on YouTube, so just look up whatever programming language you chose.

Lastly, if you are serious about not just learning how to code but also learning an introduction to computer science, I highly suggest learning some of the basic computer science fundamentals. Harvard's CS50 is available for free online if you are serious about pursuing a more formal computer science education!

Hopefully this video helped outline a path of how to start coding in 2021!
