A land whose soil is sweet / And whose shores are as salty as tears shed by its lovers / Who gave all they could give.
Lior, son of the poet Natan Yonatan, fell in the first hours of the Yom Kippur war. The words of the poem "Song of the Land", written by the bereaved father, were set to music by Sasha Argov, and arranged for flute and string orchestra by Menachem Wiesenberg.
In this video, Guy Eshed, Principal Flute of the orchestra, plays this moving piece as an encore in the opening concerts of the season, conducted by Lahav Shani. The encore was performed after Halil by Leonard Bernstein, written in memory of the flutist Yadin Tannenbaum, who also fell in the Yom Kippur war.
