Control plane
Control plane is separated in SD-WAN compared to traditional WAN. Traditional WAN has all participating routers and devices performing control plane decisions. On the other hand, vSmart controllers are centralised devices that are responsible for control plane policing in SD-WAN. vSmart controllers distribute centralised policies, routing policies, encryption, security and centralised data policies to all WAN edges in SD-WAN Fabric.
They are highly scalable and there could be up to 20 vSmart controllers in a single SD-WAN fabric. The protocol that vSmart controllers use to communicate with WAN Edge devices and other vSmart controllers is OMP. vManage configuration is communicated to vSmart controller via NETCONF protocol and vSmart then sends it to WAN edge devices via OMP protocol. Not all configuration is processed by vSmart controllers. Some configuration is sent directly from vManage to WAN Edge devices that is also done via NETCONF protocol.
