Brian Wagner shows how to mulch a young rose without burning its base
Brian Wagner from Wagner's Rose Nursery explains how he prefers to mulch roses in this demonstration. Brian likes a lucern or pea type straw that has rotted down a bit, it is a darker colour, plus he keeps it well away from the base of the plant, and, uses lots of it.
Warmer climates like in Australia's north and inland will produce a lot of reflective heat in light coloured mulches, this can burn the stems of roses, especially young ones, keep mulch at least 30cm from the base of the plant.
