Apple's new iCloud Private Relay service lets users having iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS Monterey on their devices and an iCloud+ membership to connect to the internet and surf with Safari in a more secure and private manner.
When a user browses the web, network providers and the websites they visit may typically view basic information about their web activity, such as their IP address and DNS data. This data can be used to determine the user's identity and create a profile of their browsing history and location over time. A user's data can then be combined with other data and sold to other companies, or they might be targeted with unwanted adverts and marketing campaigns.
Private Relay protects users from unwanted surveillance by encrypting traffic leaving their devices and routing requests through two different internet relays, ensuring that no single entity can combine IP addresses, location, and browsing history into detailed profile information. It's embedded right into the networking frameworks of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and it safeguards the traffic that's most vulnerable to tracking: online browsing and unencrypted connections. As a result, Private Relay secures all Safari web browsing as well as unencrypted app activities, enhancing both privacy and security. Any iCloud+ subscription includes Private Relay. This provides Apple device customers with a simple approach to significantly increase their online privacy.
Private Relay is based on the idea that IP addresses used to identify users should be kept distinct from the names of the websites they visit. Apple devised an unusual dual-hop architecture to achieve this separation, in which customers' queries are routed through two separate internet relays run by different businesses. Users' privacy is protected by Private Relay's dual-hop design, which separates who can see their IP addresses from who can see the websites they visit.
When using Private Relay, the user's device establishes a connection to the first internet relay (sometimes referred to as the "ingress proxy"). Apple maintains the software for the first internet relay in several sites across the world. The user's initial IP address is accessible to the first internet relay and the network to which they are connected as they surf (e.g., their home ISP or cellular service). The user's requested website names, on the other hand, are encrypted and cannot be accessed by any side.
The second internet relay (also known as the "egress proxy") is responsible for assigning the session's Relay IP address, decrypting the user's website name, and finishing the connection. The second internet relay has no knowledge of the user's original IP address and only receives enough location data to assign them a Relay IP address that corresponds to the region from which they are connecting, in accordance with the IP Address Location preference they selected in Private Relay settings. Third-party partners, including some of the world's major content delivery networks (CDNs), run the second internet relay. While preserving the same creative dual-hop design, the system is designed to allow new partners to be onboarded in order to give greater diversity of providers, more global coverage, and superior routing.
