How to adjust & stagger layers for colorful trailing afterimages
you need:
AE
footage with clean background
Key out the background, make a bunch of duplicate layers, drag them forward on the timeline so each layer is ~3 frames (arbitrary) ahead (or behind) the one directly above it
Ctrl + Alt + Y to make adjustment layer and add Hue/Saturation effect; adjust channel range 15° (arbitrary)
Duplicate this adjustment layer repeatedly and place 1 above each video layer
To alter overlap / parallax, make proportionate adjustments to scale/position/rotation properties of each layer. warping, turbulence, various other effects can be used to make more dynamic shapes.
simply, with the background keyed out, each layer occludes whatever is beneath it. so this won't work for an object that just expands from a central anchor point. temporal delay and shape/positioning differences should be uniform or exponential to best achieve the "trail" look; otherwise the relationship/continuity/flow between layers may be broken
