NMHS has launched our newest Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing program called ‘Aboriginal Health Champions’ (AHC). This program involves staff members nominating to become ‘champions’ to help make our health services more welcoming for Aboriginal people by creating an environment that is more culturally sensitive to Aboriginal patients and their families.
The program was launched this week on the shores of Lake Monger, a meaningful site that features in tales of the Dreaming where the Noongar rainbow serpent, the Wagyl, emerged from underground leaving a hole that filled with water to form this lake.
Barry Winmar held a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country on the lake shore and marvelled at the spirit he felt there. The dancers of Ngalak Nidja @Nglaka_nidja performed the dance of the Waalitj (eagle) and our first Aboriginal Health Champions were introduced followed by yarning and delicious nibbles from Kuditj Kitchen @kuditj
