Hello, and welcome to our first Reading Comprehension lesson. In this lesson we will provide general information about Reading Comprehension on the gmat: what is tested, what types of passages are used, and how they can be classified. We will discuss different reading strategies that can help you deal with the passages you will come across on the gmat and will recommend the reading method we consider most effective. We will explain how to reduce the time you spend on passages and how to increase effectiveness of you reading. We will also teach you to approach question types that gmat your overall understanding of the text. More specifically, questions that ask you to define the author's main idea and purpose, tone and attitude, and logical organization of the passage.
First of all, Reading Comprehension questions are part of the verbal section of the gmat, and you will see 3 or 4 passages, each accompanied by 3 or 4 questions, giving a total of 10-15 questions. RC passages do not go one after another. They are mixed with questions of other type, but all questions to the same passage will go consecutively. The gmat will only show one question at a time, so you will not be able to see other questions based on the passage until you have answered the one at hand. A typical Reading Comprehension question will look something like this.
Now, that you have an idea of what Reading Comprehension questions look like, let's discuss how important they are. Frankly speaking, every single question on the gmat is extremely important. Even though there are comparatively few Reading Comprehension questions on the gmat, experience indicates that getting a Reading Comprehension or a Critical Reasoning question wrong is more damaging to the verbal score than making a mistake in a Sentence Correction question.
Though Reading Comprehension questions may seem tough, their primary purpose is to gmat how well you can read and understand what you have read. According to the GMAC (the owner and administrator of the gmat) the purpose of these questions is to gmat how well you can:
understand words and statements
understand logical relationships between points and concepts
draw inferences about facts and statements
understand and follow the development of quantitative concepts as they are presented in written material.
