In this video, I want to present several ways to disable USB ports on a computer in order to limit access to storage media.
The first option is to disable ports by changing the BIOS or UEFI settings. When you turn on or restart the computer, I press the del key and in this UEFI window I go to the advanced section by pressing F7. Then I switch to the “Advanced” mode, in it I select “USB Configuration” and here I open “USB Single Port Control”.
As a demonstration of the final result, I disconnect all available ports. By pressing the F10 key I save the changes made. The computer restarts and starts Windows. Disabling all ports made the USB mouse inactive. Accordingly, other connected devices via USB will also be disconnected. Of course, and a flash drive in this situation will not work. Therefore, using this method, it is necessary to disconnect the ports selectively, or, having disabled everything, use exclusively the equipment that works on other ports.
A more sparing option would be to use the device manager. To do this, on the desktop, right-click on the icon “This computer” in the drop-down list, select “Properties”, then - device manager, where I select “USB controllers”. In the above list, passing through each item where possible, I turn off the device. I leave untouched the ports where the webcam and mouse are connected. It remains to verify what the result will be. I install a USB flash drive in one of the connectors of the USB hub connected to the PC. We can see that nothing happens in the OS, despite the activity of the storage medium.
You can disable USB ports in the operating system using the Group Policy Editor. In this case, on the desktop, using the Win + R key combination, running the Run window, I enter the command presented. In the editor that opens, go to Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System and Access to removable storage devices. To limit, select "Deny access to all classes of removable storage devices" and select "Enable", and then "Apply" and "OK". When connecting a USB flash drive to a computer, go to the desktop "This computer" on the desktop and open not only this USB flash drive, but also any removable disk. Access denied message is displayed. Also, in the Group Policy Editor, you can limit the access of storage media by selecting the "Prevent reading for removable drives" option and opening it, select "Enabled" in it. As a result, having connected the storage medium and having tried to enter it, we see the message “Access denied”.
A possible way to turn off USB drives is to use the registry editor. This method allows you to close access for various USB-drives, but other devices, such as keyboards, mice, printers, scanners will still work. On the desktop, having called the "Run" window, I enter the command "Regedit" and click "OK". The registry editor opens, where you need to go to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ USBSTOR. In the right part of the window, click on the “Start” item and in the place of the displayed value “3”, prescribe “4”, which will block access to USB drives. To check, I install the USB flash drive in the USB hub and go to "This computer." We can see that the removable disk is not displayed at all.
You can use special programs to disable USB ports to limit access to storage media. For an example I will present this. By launching it, you must select one of the options: “Disable” or “Enable”. I select the first one, after which it is necessary to click "Apply" and restart the computer. After starting the system, install the USB flash drive and check again. We can see that, as in the previous method, the storage medium is not displayed. If you go to the registry editor, you can see that the program simply changes the Start key.
