Shakespeare wrote four such plays which were based on the real historical events of the Roman era. These plays were, Titus Andronicus, Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. William Shakespeare used the translation of Plutarch's Lives by Thomas North for all his dramas which were based on Roman History. We have already discussed the summary of Titus Andronicus, and today we will analyze the summary of Julius Caesar. Shakespeare used a typical idiom 'It is Greek to me' in this play. This idiom was used by Casca, one of the characters of the play, a member of the assassin group that killed Julius Caesar. Marcus Brutus is another major character. He is an honourable noble-hearted man who is lead to opt for the wrong path through treacherous political tricks. In many ways, Marcus Brutus appear to be the main tragic hero of this play. Another major character is Mark Antony who instigates the civil war against the conspirators lead by Cassius by offering a very eloquent and diplomatic rhetoric speech, obituary of Julius Caeser. Cicero, Calpurnia, and Portia are other major characters of the play.
This play was produced and performed in 1599. Queen Elizabeth 1 was too aged by that time and she had yet not declared any heir to the British crown. People were worried about the succession of England's monarch and at that time, Shakespeare brought a new play whose theme was also national leadership.
