The diagnostics of otolaryngology has really been revolutionized in the last decade or so with the advent of in-office CT scanning, wide use of ultrasonography, and advanced image-guided procedures. High-resolution images of the sinuses of the neck and really good visualization of the sinus fields and nasal cavity have enabled otolaryngologists to make diagnoses and proceed with treatment quickly and effectively.
The development of in-office procedures for the treatment of chronic sinusitis is one of the most exciting developments in our field. These 10 or 15-minute procedures often with image-guided parameters can mean a patient who has been on antibiotics, over and over again and on multiple types of medications, may not need another round of antibiotics for months or years. These in-office procedures have been a true paradigm shift in our practice.
