What is quantum entanglement? What does the future promise in quantum technologies?
Alain Aspect, physicist, distinguished scientist and professor at Ecole Polytechnique and Laboratoire Charles Fabry, with a career of sustained accomplishment in fundamental physics, delivered his Shannon Luminary Lecture on February 7, 2019. Alain's lecture title was entitled, "The Future of quantum technologies: the Second quantum revolution."
Alain was one of the first to experimentally confirm quantum entanglement, a bizarre area of quantum mechanics that perplexed Einstein and many others. This understanding has led to applications of quantum mechanics beyond the lab scale, towards quantum computing and provably secure communications. Alain has also made breakthroughs in laser cooling, Bose-Einstein condensates, and atom lasers.
