Digital Video Cassette (DVC) specification was finalized in 1994, one year after ten companies - Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Thomson, Philips, Hitachi, Toshiba, Sharp, Mitsubishi and Sanyo - formed HD Digital VCR Consortium to spearhead the development of digital VCR for home use. Augmented with professional versions and having transcended magnetic tape into tapeless media, the format has become known as DV.
DV has been used for home videos, documentaries and even for feature movies by professional filmmakers like David Lynch, Mike Figgis, Steven Soderbergh, Jeff Tremaine and Lars von Trier.
