When the blood supply that oxygenates the heart muscle is significantly decreased or stopped entirely, a heart attack happens. This occurs as a result of plaque, which is a mass of cholesterol, fat, and other compounds, blocking the coronary arteries that provide blood to the heart muscle. This sluggish progression is referred to as atherosclerosis. A blood clot forms on plaque that ruptures in a cardiac artery.
