Every human body is unique and different. What is true for one body is not true for another. The principles behind anatomy and physiology are the same for all, but how they manifest in your unique body is individual to you!!
Milk making glands (type 1 lobules) are developed during puberty when breasts develop. With each period you have as a young woman, lobules change and mature into type 2 lobules in preparation of future pregnancy. This is why breasts sometime feel tender and swell during periods. Issues delaying/changing puberty and menstruation (like missed periods, PCOS, eating disorders, or other things that interrupt hormones and cycles) can impact the development of these milk making cells. During pregnancy, the lobules in the breast mature into type 3 and are supposed to double in number. Stimulation in the first week after birth helps lay down hormone receptors in these milk making cells to tell your body to start making milk and increase its volume
Every breast has its own unique number of these lobules. So the amount of milk one breast can make and store at any given time is different than the amount of milk in the other. Which can sometimes be the reason why you have a “slacker boob” (AKA “shitty titty”). Trying to compare your milk supply to someone else’s is like comparing body shape or size. Don’t do it. Their anatomy is different than yours and you never know what their full medical history includes
If you’re struggling with low supply, work with an IBCLC to figure out why. Some times low supply may be from how your anatomy developed in puberty, how breasts were influenced by hormones in your young adult life, or from lack of stimulation in the early days after birth (or a combination of all of those!!)
