Halted in development due to the success of Populous: Revival, The Age of Populous is a mode where you play Populous: The Beginning in a similar style to that of Age of Empires; new buildings and spells are unlocked as your tribe advances through ‘ages’.
How it works:
Players begin in the Tribal Age with minimal spells and buildings. A tribe’s priority in this age is to meet the requirements to advance to the Fire Age as quickly as possible to unlock more offensive spells and buildings.
Players can hinder enemy tribes by sabotaging their settlement with spies and lightning bolts, and can cause a nuisance with Swarm and Invisibility. Advancing to the age ahead of your enemies is a big advantage.
Players must meet a population and building requirement to start advancing to the next age. As soon as the requirements are met, the advancement will begin automatically and cannot be cancelled. Tribes generate 50% less mana whilst they are advancing.
Tribes are limited to a certain number of buildings in each age, unless they reach the Ascension Age where there is no limit. All buildings must be undamaged and fully built to meet the advancement requirement. The dismantling or upgrading process counts as not being built. Towers are never a requirement to advance to another age, but they do count towards the maximum building limit.
The Shaman becomes an immediate threat once players reach the Fire Age, with Blast now being available to every Shaman regardless of another Tribe's age. The advanced tribe will unlock offensive and defensive followers in the warriors and fire warriors respectively, and they'll be able to expand their settlement and create new paths thanks to Landbridge; and attacks against other tribes will be more devastating with Tornado now in their arsenal.
Players can now place an additional ten plans to increase the size of their settlement and map presence.
Convert is no longer available outside of the Tribal Age.
The game will start to open up in this age as players fight to prevent their enemies from advancing ahead of them. The Shaman has yet to unlock her full potential and trained followers will play a key role in assaulting enemies; tribes could fall in this age if they do not balance their economy correctly.
If a tribe advances to the next age, the Divine Age, in a much faster time than their enemies, they would be wise to capitalise on their advantage. An additional 13 buildings can be built and the Temple becomes available for construction. Preachers need no introduction, and against tribes that have yet to reach the Divine Age, they will pose a huge threat.
Ghost Army finally becomes available, allowing you to deceive your opponents and ease your way through an enemy’s defence. The enemy settlement will be susceptible to new terraforming spells in Flatten and Erode, as well as the destructive Earthquake, which is a sure fire way of crippling a tribe’s hope of reaching the next age.
It is likely that a game has already been decided by the time a tribe reaches the Ascension Age. The building limit is removed in this age and Hypnotise, Firestorm and Volcano become available to be charged and cast.
