Types of Firearms
Handguns
A handgun is a short-barreled firearm that can be held and used with one hand.
The two most common handgun sub-types in use today are revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.
In the United States and some other countries around the world, handguns are also widely available to civilians and commonly carried for self-defense.
Revolvers
Revolvers feed ammunition via the rotation of a cartridge-filled cylinder, in which each cartridge is contained in its own ignition chamber.
These nominally cylindrical chambers, usually numbering between five and eight depending on the size of the revolver and the size of the cartridge being fired
As the cylinder rotates, the chambers revolve about the cylinder's axis.
Pistols
The recoil force of the semi-automatic pistol is used to push the slide back and eject the shell so that the magazine spring can push another round up; then as the slide returns, it chambers the round.
Magazine: This is a device for storing cartridges in a repeating firearm for. loading into the chamber.
Rifles
A rifle is a single-person portable, long-barrelled firearm designed for accurate shooting
The barrel has a helical pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the bore wall.
In keeping with their focus on accuracy, rifles are typically designed to be held with both hands and braced via a firm buttstock against the shooter's shoulder for stability during shooting.
Assault Weapons
An assault rifle is fully automatic, a machine gun.
This is defined as the ability to fire multiple bullets with a single pull of the trigger.
Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.
Examples include:

M-16 Rifle Family (lower image)
Often confused with the AR-15 based on looks
AR-15
AR-15-style rifles by law function like other semiautomatic civilian sporting firearms, as they fire only one round with each pull of the trigger.
However, the AR-15 can look like military rifles, such as the M-16
The AR-15 has been commercially sold to the American public since the 1960’s and are commonly-owned, with more than 16 million modern sporting rifles owned by civilians by 2018.
