Canker sores, also known as aphthous ulcers, are small, shallow lesions that develop on the soft tissues inside your mouth or at the base of your gums. They are typically white or yellowish and surrounded by a red border. Canker sores can be quite painful, especially when eating or drinking, and they can make talking uncomfortable.
While their exact cause isn't always clear, potential triggers include mouth trauma, food sensitivities, hormonal changes, stress, genetic predisposition, weakened immune system, nutritional deficiencies, and allergic reactions. These factors can irritate the delicate mouth tissues, leading to the development of canker sores.
Canker sores typically manifest as small, painful ulcers inside the mouth, often with a white or yellowish center and a red border. They can cause discomfort while eating, drinking, or talking, and may lead to tenderness and minor swelling in the affected area. While usually healing within one to two weeks, recurrent or severe cases may require medical attention.
Treatments for canker sores typically include over-the-counter topical medications, such as gels or mouth rinses containing numbing agents, as well as pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Prescription-strength corticosteroids may be recommended for severe cases. Avoiding irritants, managing stress, and maintaining good oral hygiene can also help alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
