Korean War draftees board buses in Johnstown as family, friends say goodbye
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — This week’s look into our extensive film archive goes back 73 years as people say goodbye to men leaving for war.
America goes to war, and once again, Johnstown, along with other towns all over the county, answers the call. This time, it’s the Korean War.
It’s March 8th, 1951, and our cameras are in Johnstown as draftees board buses headed off for military service.
The US entered the Korean War just 9 months earlier, and the country drafted men between ages 18 and 35.
Video shows a large crowd gathering to say goodbye, and you can see in their faces, the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
A member of the Salvation Army hands the soon-to-be soldiers a care package as the young men board the bus.
Friends and family wish them good luck, with a handshake through the window.
The video also shows a couple taking the chance for a final long kiss goodbye.
The conflict in Korea is often called the forgotten war, which ended in 1953.
