The Samhain Fire Festival in Edinburgh on October 31 drew hundreds of spectators who enjoyed an impressive display of fire-play, music, and dance. The event took place in Holyrood Park and celebrated the transition from summer to winter, in keeping with traditional Celtic customs. Samhain, regarded as a precursor to modern Halloween, marks the end of the old Celtic year and the onset of the new year, during which it is believed that the spirits of the dead are honored and ushered into the next world.
