Inch Pounds To Foot Pounds Conversion Explained For a Torque Wrench!
Hey guys this is quick way to learn how to convert inch pounds to foot pounds and vice versa. When you are working on the in lbs to ft lbs formula you want to remember the 12 is going to be the constant, because there is 12 inches in a foot. When converting inch pounds to foot pounds you are going divide it by 12 and when you are converting foot pounds to inch pounds you want to multiple it by 12.
Inch lbs to Foot lbs Examples:
Let say you have a coupling that is rated for 288 in-lbs and you have a motor and gearbox that are rated for 22 Foot lbs. Would the coupling have enough torque to transmit the torque?
288 in lbs ÷ 12 = 24 Ft lbs
Yes, the coupling is able to transmit the torque.
Foot lbs to Inch lbs Example:
Lets say you have a motor and gear box that are rated for 12 ft lbs and you have a coupling connecting them that is rated for 120 in lbs. Would the coupling be able to transmit the torque of the motor and gear box?
12 Ft lbs x 12 = 144 in lbs
No. The motor and gear box are rated in 144 inch pounds, and the coupling is only rated for 120 inch pounds. The coupling would be able to transmit the torque and would fail.
