The Botanical Garden of Puerto de la Cruz, also known as Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava, was founded by order of King Charles III of Spain. The idea for the garden arose from the need to acclimatise exotic plants brought from Spain's tropical colonies before transporting them to the mainland.
The first director and founder of the garden was Francisco Javier de Ursini y Palafox, who directed the project from the beginning. The garden was conceived as a scientific institution for the study and acclimatisation of plants, and has since become an important centre for botanical research and the protection of rare flora.
Today, the garden is one of Tenerife's main attractions, attracting both tourists and scientists interested in botany and exotic plants.
