Libertarianism is a political ideology that holds liberty as its key value. Liberty is best defined as the state of being free from restrictions, so as you might have guessed, Libertarians want less restrictions in society. A broad ideology with a left and a right, most Libertarians agree that the government is one of the most restrictive things in society, because without certain individual freedoms that we have, governments can do things like imprison people for as long as they like, take away people’s money and track them wherever we are. Individual freedoms are thus things that almost all libertarians, left and right, emphasize,
meaning they want to maximise things like freedom of speech, the right to vote and the right to a fair trial.

You won’t get much of a debate between a left libertarian and a right libertarian on the need to stay out of foreign wars, or the need for a less powerful police force. However, it’s a different story when it comes to economics. Left wing libertarians want an end to capitalism and private property which they argue are institutions the state forces on people, thus depriving them of liberty. The left libertarian critique of capitalism often overlaps with the Marxist critique, and I can go into that in another video. But safe to say, left wing libertarians see freedom from capitalism as their primary goal.

Ironically, right wing libertarians see unregulated capitalism and strong property rights as their primary goal. Capitalism, according to the right wing libertarian viewpoint, increases people’s liberty, because it gives them the best chance to make their own economic decisions in life, and bear the consequences, the powerful succeed, the weak do not. Along this line of reasoning, governments are often coercive actors against capitalism through regulation and violating property rights, something which must be avoided.
